Final Cut, one hand on the pad.
Editing stays on the keyboard. The pad is for review: play, snap, zoom to fit, and undo, in the places Final Cut does not already claim.
Final Cut Pro is a three-panel application with a keyboard-driven edit. The trackpad is already good at the timeline: two-finger scroll pans, pinch zooms. A layout that claims those makes the edit worse. The useful scene is transport and review, which is where one hand is free anyway.
Who owns which control
| Control | What it does | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Two-finger scroll | Pan the timeline / browser | Keep |
| Pinch | Zoom the timeline | Keep |
| Space | Play / pause | Keyboard |
| Command-B | Blade at playhead | Keyboard |
| Shift-Z | Zoom to fit | Keyboard |
| N | Toggle snapping | Keyboard |
The scene
- Two-finger tap: Play / pause.
- Top-left corner: Zoom to fit (Shift-Z) for reviewing the whole cut.
- Top-right corner: Toggle snapping (N).
- Bottom-right corner: Undo.
- Left and right edges: Brightness and volume.
- Bottom edge: Media scrub, only if you review with music.
Build it
Create a scene for Final Cut Pro, start from the Presenter recipe for the transport shape, then change the actions to the Final Cut shortcuts above. Keep the two-finger swipes off: Final Cut uses them for timeline movement in some views, and a second claimant makes the timeline feel unpredictable.
When the keyboard wins
If your left hand is already on Space and Shift-Z, the scene adds nothing. The people it helps are reviewing cuts with one hand and a coffee in the other, or working on a laptop trackpad in a position where the function row is a stretch.
Resolve and Premiere
The idea transfers, the shortcuts do not. Create a separate scene for each app and map that app’s own transport and zoom keys. Do not copy a Final Cut scene into Resolve and assume it works.
Make the trackpad do more than point.
TrackStudio maps edges, corners, areas, gestures, and haptics to the app in front of you. $5 once. No subscription, no account.

Does Final Cut Pro support trackpad gestures?
It supports scrolling and pinch-zoom on the timeline. Transport and editing commands are keyboard shortcuts, which a layout app can map to corners.
Will a scene break timeline zoom?
Only if you map pinch or scroll. Leave both alone and keep the scene to corners and a tap.
Is a trackpad scene faster than the keyboard?
No. It is easier to remember for review actions. Editors who know the shortcuts should keep them.
Does the scene work in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere?
Not directly; create a separate scene for each app. Some shortcuts differ, so map them per app.
