Three-finger drag.

The built-in drag gesture is buried in Accessibility settings. Here is how to turn it on, what it collides with, and when to skip it.

Three-finger drag lets you move a window, select text, or drag a file by resting three fingers and moving them, without holding the button down. It is a macOS Accessibility feature rather than a Trackpad setting, which is why people cannot find it in the obvious place.

Where it lives. System Settings, Accessibility, Pointer Control, Trackpad Options. Turn on "Use trackpad for dragging", then choose "Three Finger Drag" as the dragging style.

What it is good for

Moving a window without a click-hold. Selecting a long passage without your hand cramping. Dragging a file between two folders. Using the Mac one-handed while the other hand is on a phone or a notebook. It is also the closest thing macOS has to a drag that does not require pressure, which helps people with hand pain.

How to test it in 30 seconds

Open TextEdit and type two lines. Rest three fingers on the trackpad and move them across the text. If the selection follows, it works. If the pointer moves without selecting, the dragging style is not set to three fingers. If nothing moves, the toggle is off or another app is capturing the gesture.

Why a drag sometimes stops

Three-finger drag ends when any finger lifts. That is normal. If it stops mid-move, you are lifting a contact slightly without noticing. Drag Lock, in the same Trackpad Options pane, keeps the drag active after you lift, so you can reposition your hand and continue. It is slower to start and easier to finish.

When to skip it

Skip three-finger drag if you do precision design work where three contacts shift the cursor, if you rely on three-finger swipes in apps, or if you already use a trackpad surface with three-finger actions. The gesture is excellent for long selections and window moves; it is not the best tool for pixel-level work.

The alternative: a trackpad surface

TrackStudio does not replace three-finger drag, and it does not need to. It maps edges, corners, drawn areas, and taps to actions. Its three-finger tap and swipe options can collide with drag if both are enabled, so either use four-finger actions in TrackStudio or apply the Minimal recipe, which turns multi-finger and corner actions off and leaves the edges.

Honest fit test. If you drag windows and select text all day, enable three-finger drag and keep the rest of the trackpad quiet. If you want fewer reaches to controls rather than a new way to drag, a surface layout is the better tool.

Questions

Where is the three-finger drag setting on macOS?

System Settings, Accessibility, Pointer Control, Trackpad Options. Enable "Use trackpad for dragging" and choose Three Finger Drag.

Does three-finger drag work on a Magic Trackpad?

Yes. The same Accessibility pane applies to the built-in trackpad and to an external Magic Trackpad.

Why does my three-finger drag stop halfway?

A finger lifted. Three-finger drag ends when any contact leaves the pad. Drag Lock keeps the drag active after you lift.

Can I use three-finger drag and three-finger tap together?

They conflict. Move Look Up to Force Click or turn it off, and keep three-finger tap for drag only.
