TrackStudio vs Haptiker: Surface or Four Edges?

Haptiker owns all four edges. TrackStudio owns the surface around them. The honest answer depends on whether you want four controls or a scene system.

Haptiker is one of the most complete edge apps of 2026. It puts volume on the right edge, brightness on the left, keyboard backlight on the top, and app switching on the bottom. TrackStudio starts from the same surface but arranges the whole trackpad into per-app scenes.

We make TrackStudio, so read this with that bias in mind. The useful question is not which app has more features. It is whether you want four excellent edge controls or a surface you can lay out.

Short answerBuy Haptiker if you want four edge controls, a keyboard-backlight slider, a bottom-edge app switcher, a seven-day trial, and a lower price. Buy TrackStudio if you want corners, custom areas, center gestures, per-app scenes, media scrub, and a haptic language across the whole surface. If four edges is the job, Haptiker is the better buy.

What Haptiker does well

Haptiker turns all four edges into controls. The right edge is volume; double-tap to mute or jump to a preset. The left edge is display brightness, and it follows the display under your cursor, including external monitors on Apple silicon over DDC/CI. The top edge is keyboard backlight. The bottom edge is an optional app switcher: flick to the previous app, or double-tap to browse recent apps.

It costs $4.99 at the launch price, $7.99 regular, with a seven-day trial and a license for three Macs. It runs on macOS 12 or later, supports Apple silicon and Intel, and works with a built-in Force Touch trackpad or a Magic Trackpad. Gesture guards are strong: a slide only counts when one finger starts on the edge and runs along it. Two-finger scrolls and mid-pad swipes are ignored. Haptic ticks confirm each step, and the app has no analytics.

What TrackStudio does

TrackStudio maps the whole trackpad. The left and right edges can be brightness and volume rails; the bottom edge can scrub media; the corners can run actions; you can draw rectangular areas for anything else; the center can hold a gesture. Each app can have its own scene, so Safari, Figma, Final Cut Pro, and VS Code can behave differently.

It also has a haptic language: detents on the rails, a tick when an action runs, a texture while scrubbing. It costs ₹499 one-time and runs on macOS 13 or later. There is no trial listed. The documented action list does not include a keyboard-backlight control, and it does not document a bottom-edge app-switching flick. It is not a scripting platform, a key remapper, or a full window manager.

Choose Haptiker if…

You want all four edges to do something. You change keyboard backlight often and do not want to hunt through Control Center. You want a bottom-edge app switcher. You want a seven-day trial before paying. You want a lower one-time price and a license for three Macs. You do not need corners, custom areas, per-app scenes, or media scrub. You want to install it and use it without designing a layout.

Choose TrackStudio if…

You want the whole trackpad to be a layout, not just four strips. You want a different arrangement for Figma, Final Cut Pro, VS Code, and Safari. You want media scrub on the bottom edge, corners for Mission Control or screenshots, and custom areas for undo/redo or tabs. You care about haptic feedback across the whole surface. You are willing to pay more than an edge-only utility and to spend a little time arranging scenes.

Can you use both?

Yes, but do not give both apps the same edge. Pick one owner for each strip. If Haptiker owns the left, right, top, and bottom edges, use TrackStudio for corners, areas, center gestures, and scenes. If TrackStudio owns the edges, turn Haptiker off or restrict it to the keyboard-backlight and app-switching edges. Two apps fighting over the same edge will feel unpredictable.

The bottom line

Haptiker is the better four-edge app. It is cheaper, has a trial, and covers two controls TrackStudio does not document: keyboard backlight and bottom-edge app switching. TrackStudio is the better whole-surface app. If you want four edges, buy Haptiker. If you want per-app scenes and a surface you can arrange, TrackStudio is the more natural place to start.

Questions

Is Haptiker a TrackStudio replacement?

Only if four edge controls are the job. Haptiker is better for volume, brightness, keyboard backlight, and bottom-edge app switching. TrackStudio adds corners, custom areas, center gestures, per-app scenes, and media scrub.

Does TrackStudio control keyboard backlight?

The documented TrackStudio action list does not include keyboard backlight. Haptiker does, on the top edge. If keyboard backlight is essential, buy Haptiker or check the current TrackStudio build before assuming.

Does Haptiker have per-app scenes?

No. Haptiker is focused on edge controls. It does not have a per-app scene editor.

Which one has a trial?

Haptiker has a seven-day trial. TrackStudio does not list a trial in the current store.

Can I use Haptiker and TrackStudio together?

Yes, if they do not own the same edge. Give Haptiker the four edges and TrackStudio the corners, areas, center, and scenes — or the other way around.
